Tips for winter safety
12-11-2024

This time of year presents unique challenges, including slippery roads, icy sidewalks and increased danger on waterways. It is essential to prioritize safety during this season of cold temperatures and inclement weather. Learn how to avoid cold weather hazards and injuries with tips from Hennepin County Workplace Safety, Transportation Operations and Sheriff’s Office.
Avoiding slips, trips and falls
Slips, trips and falls are a leading cause of injury for Hennepin County employees. Winter months present the highest risk for slips and falls due to adverse weather, low light conditions and surface ice and snow.
You can’t change the weather, but you can reduce your risk of slipping and falling by:
• Investing in and wearing sturdy winter footwear
Carry your dress shoes and change once you reach your destination
• Going slower and adjusting your stride to a pace that is suitable for the walking surface
• Walking like a “penguin” by keeping a low center of gravity and shuffling your feet on slippery sidewalks or roadways
• Using handrails for support going up or down exterior stairs
• Avoiding using your phone or other distractions while walking
• Using extra caution when entering a building with wet footwear

Make sure your vehicle is prepared for winter weather
Adequate tires, lights, wipers and wiper fluid are key to driving safely

Maintain a full tank of gas, when possible
On the road
Always wear your seatbelt
Drive at speeds safe for road conditions
Increase the distance between your vehicle and others
Use headlights, even in the daytime
Be safe around snowplows
Keep at least 10 car-lengths behind snowplows and drive slowly around them
Do not pass a plow truck on either side
Do not drive on windrows of snow as they tend to spread the plowed snow back out from where crews have already plowed
It takes time for de-icing material to become effective, even in warm temperatures – please be patient
Hills, curves, bridges and shaded areas can still be slippery even if other parts of the road are not or plow trucks have passed through
If you get into trouble on icy roads
Stay calm and ease off the gas if skidding
Turn the steering wheel in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go
