State of the County

On Thursday, May 8, Hennepin County Board Chair Irene Fernando delivered the 2025 State of the County address at the 625 Building Auditorium in Minneapolis. The event was attended by state, city and community leaders, county staff and representatives from throughout the county.

The program opened with remarks from County Administrator David Hough and a blessing by LeMoine LaPointe—one of the original drafters of the county’s Land and Water Acknowledgement. Hennepin County Commissioners Angela Conley, Debbie Goettel, Heather Edelson and Kevin Anderson then read the Land and Water Acknowledgement. Throughout the program, North Minneapolis-based youth choir Known MPLS performed.

Chair Fernando’s remarks centered on the theme that Hennepin County is Strong, Vibrant and Committed, underscoring our collective efforts to reduce disparities, strengthen collaboration, and improve the lives of all residents.

“Our strength lies in the people who serve,” Fernando said. “Hennepin County is vibrant because of our diversity, and we remain committed to building a future where every resident has the opportunity to thrive.”

Chair Fernando also recognized the dedication of county employees who work across more than 100 service locations, delivering essential services and driving innovation. “From maintaining public safety to supporting families and improving infrastructure, employees bring passion and purpose to their roles every day,” she stated.

“Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for our workforce. Your commitment to excellence is the backbone of the success we celebrate here today, and the foundation for the future we are working on building together. Thank you for choosing Hennepin, and for making our world a more vibrant and equitable place for all.”

Following the address, attendees gathered to network and engage with county departments and local businesses represented at the event.
