Spotlight: Putting residents at the ‘heart’ of every ceremony

From curiosity to connection

Service center team members are exemplifying the county core value of People First as they provide marriage services and ceremonies.

Deborah Scurlock, a dedicated service center representative in Resident Services, has embraced a unique way to strengthen her commitment to customer service as a wedding officiant, and to date, has performed more than 100 weddings.

Initially driven by curiosity about the role, Deborah quickly discovered that officiating weddings was more than an additional job responsibility — it was an opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives.

“I’ve met a lot of people, a lot of people,” she says, highlighting the personal connections she forms during each ceremony. In one particularly touching moment, a bride shared she had recently beaten cancer. Her fiancé made a promise to marry her once she successfully completed treatment. Deborah recalls, “I was so honored to be able to be there to officiate.”
