A journey worth celebrating

The usual quiet of Minneapolis’ historic Sumner Library was joyfully interrupted on April 6 as library staff welcomed two loyal patrons whose dedication inspired a new system-wide program.
Between 2019 and 2023, Hennepin County residents Linda and Glenn Goecke visited all 41 county libraries – a journey that sparked the creation of the Hennepin County Library passport program. To honor their remarkable achievement, Library Director Scott Duimstra presented the couple with fully stamped passports and a commemorative button that reads, “I visited all 41 Hennepin County libraries.”
“These were created because of your story,” Duimstra told the Goeckes. “Your dedication and love for the libraries inspired a new way for everyone to explore and appreciate the unique offerings at each location.”
The passport program invites patrons to collect stamps at each branch they visit, with space to log the date and favorite features along the way. “It’s a tangible way to celebrate the distinct character of each library and to foster deeper connections with the communities we serve,” said Duimstra.
“It was just the most wonderful project,” said Linda, beaming as she pinned her new button to her lapel. “We’re just thrilled with our passports – it’s so exciting!”
What started as a curiosity quickly became a rewarding adventure. “We got more enthused as we went,” said Glenn. “We visited parts of the county we’d never been to before. We loved learning about the history. One thing we really liked about all the libraries is the art – each one has something different, and it’s all so well done.”
It was an experience filled with many books, small discoveries and meaningful moments. “It was something we could do together,” said Linda. “Almost like traveling because you're seeing all these new things.”
Now, with each page of their passports filled, the Goeckes are considering a second tour. “We were just talking today – we might have to re-do it this year,” said Glenn.
“We hope this program gets people to visit our libraries,” Duimstra said. “See the art, the exhibits, the architecture – every branch offers something unique.”
Passports are now available at all open library locations. Pick yours up today and start your own adventure – just like the Goeckes.
“I hope other people are inspired to do it, because we had the most wonderful time,” said Linda. “It’s a great library system. We’re lucky to have it.”
